What is coronavirus?

Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses. There are some coronaviruses that commonly circulate in humans. These viruses cause mild to moderate respiratory illness, although rarely they can cause severe disease. COVID-19 is closely related to two other animal coronaviruses that have caused outbreaks in people—the SARS coronavirus and the MERS (middle east respiratory syndrome) coronavirus.

What do I do if I have symptoms?

  • Stay home, unless you need to seek medical care

  • Call ahead before visiting your doctor, clinic, or hospital

  • Wear a face mask to avoid spreading germs

  • Cover your cough with a tissue and immediately throw it in the trash, or cough into your bent elbow. Wash your hands after using a tissue.

  • Wash your hands often and avoid sharing personal items

What can I do to prevent getting infected?

Steps can be taken to help prevent getting infected with coronavirus.  These steps are also helpful in preventing infection from other viruses also, such as cold and flu, and should be practiced on a regular basis.

  • Wash hands frequently, for at least 20 seconds with soap and water

  • Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth.

  • Practice social distancing by putting more space between yourself and others.  6 feet or more if possible.

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces and objects daily (light switches, door knobs, remote controls, cell phone, etc.)

  • Eat nutritious foods, try to get good sleep and physical activity each day

How can I prevent spreading viruses?

  • If you are ill, stay home. The virus can't spread if you stay home.

  • Wear a mask in public.  It is possible to have a virus and not show symptoms.  Wearing a mask helps control the spread of viruses to others.
